The moment we’ve been waiting years for has finally arrived: we’ve just finished our first gaming session with the PlayStation 3. It won’t be our last.

Although the new  – yet familiar – controllers (shown above) were attached to a server farm in the middle of the E3 games show in Los Angeles, we’re assured that these towers of developer kits have the same power and specs as the finished consoles.

The curvy PS3 enclosure was locked away in a display cabinet, its innards empty. But once the two come together in November, the gaming landscape will be changed forever.

The good news? Well, the PS3 works and, even six months before launch, the pin-sharp high-definition graphics it produces are more than a match for the Xbox 360. The bad news? As with the 360, sequels and franchises are the order of the day, and the playable games on show offered few surprises.

That didn’t stop the massive PlayStation stand from being swamped by crowds of excitable journalists and industry insiders: there’s no denying that this is the most hotly anticipated tech launch of the decade.
