Honor V8 lands with Huawei’s dual-cameras, but no Leica logo
USB Type-C on board too, because it's just so 2016
Can you work out why Honor’s called its latest and greatest smartphone after a snarling V8 car engine? No, us neither. Still, catchy name, right?
The Honor V8 just got an official unveiling in China, and it’s got plenty of familiar features for anyone that’s seen the Huawei P9 – not least those two 12MP cameras on the back.
The dual-camera setup might have the same sensor setup, complete with laser autofocus, f/2.2 aperture and a dual-tone LED flash, but the V8 doesn’t get to share the P9’s Leica branding.
It should still be pretty capable when it comes to smartphone snaps, and that 8MP, f/2.4 aperture camera up front sounds bang on the money for sharp selfies.
There’s plenty more here to like in terms of spec, with Honor really giving other big name phone companies a run for their money.
You’ve got a choice between two models: both have a 5.7in screen, but while one sticks to 1080p, the other jumps up to QHD. That’s a first for Honor.
The 1080p V8 has one of Huawei’s octa-core Kirin 950 processors running the show, but the QHD version steps up to the more powerful Kirin 955.
Both have a whopping 4GB of RAM, and if the 32GB of storage that comes as standard isn’t enough, the QHD model has a step-up 64GB version. Still, with a microSD card slot on board, you can always add more storage (a lot more storage) later.
You’ve got to put up with Huawei’s EMUI, but it’s Android 6 Marshmallow running underneath, and the 3500mAh battery should keep you going all day. USB Type-C and fast charging mean you won’t be waiting around for a top-up, either.
Oh, and don’t forget the fingerprint sensor on the back panel, with a choice of ceramic white, platinum silver, rose gold, champagne gold, ice silver and grey colours.
Will it make its way to our shores? Maybe not for a while, seeing how the launch event was in China, where prices start from 2299 yuan (US$352). Still, going by specs alone, we’ve got our fingers crossed it’ll be headed abroad soon.
