Apple’s given us the biggest surprise since it approved Spotify’s app last year, with the news it has granted the App Store thumbs-up to Opera’s Mini browser.
Opera had done nothing to charm its way into the Apple’s good books, showing its browser to be 5 times faster than Safari Mobile in a demo video for the browser.
However it had always stayed positive, saying the app would be coming “soon” to Apple’s App Store. And its bold move has paid off – the browser is available to download now.
The good news is that if you decide to give the speedy browser a go, you’ll find data charges squashed thanks to compression of up to 90% before the website loads on your iPhone. You’ll also not need to reload webpages when pressing the back button, as previously visited pages are cached for quick loading.
The bad news? We’d expect that Safari will remain the default browser for launching links from email and text messages – a bit of an inconvenience, but you’ll just have to remember to cut and paste.
