Samsung Gear 2 Solo with SIM card slot incoming?
What? You didn't think Samsung had any intentions of slowing down, did you?
Samsung’s Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches have barely been out for a month, but rumours of a successor have already flittered out of the Samsung rumour mill.
According to import-export database Zauba, Samsung has shipped a SIM card-toting Gear 2 variant – reportedly called the Gear 2 Solo – to India for testing purposes.
There are no specs or pictures to shed any more light on the mysterious device, but we expect it to be almost identical to the current Gear 2, which include an IR blaster, an OLED display and a Tizen-based operating system.
It’s unclear whether or not the Gear 2 Solo will retain the Gear 2’s camera, or, like the Gear 2 Neo, ditch it entirely.
The current Gear 2’s functionality is crippled when it’s not tethered to a smartphone as it won’t allow you to read your messages or notifications without a connection, although it still allows you to listen to locally stored music.
A SIM-supporting Gear 2 would let you read (and even reply to) texts and emails as well as make calls, instead of merely answering them.
Whether or not anyone actually wants a watchphone is another matter entirely, but given Samsung’s ‘throw everything at a wall and see what sticks’ philosophy, we can’t say we’re too surprised.
That’s all the info we have for the time being, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated with more news as and when we get it.
