The service, which you’ll be able to access via XrossMediaBar interface, is designed to let you watch full-length web shows via a Sony Blu-ray player or flatscreen.

But there is a rather big downside – the only channel that will be available in the service when it first launches will be Five. So that’s, er, Home and Away and Neighbours covered at least.

Sony’s new Blu-ray players, the BDP-S560 and BDP-S760, also don’t appear to support the new service, but do offer Wi-Fi for wireless surround sound via S-AIR (Sony Audio Interactive Radio Frequency).

The flagship S760 comes with lots of snazzy image processing such as the ‘HD Reality Enhancer’ and ‘super bit mapping’ to help smooth the 1080p picture further, and 7.1-channel audio output.

Those with a less powerful home cinema system will want to plump for the S560, which has a 2-channel audio output and offers a similarly speedy start-up time of six seconds.
