YouTube is embracing the sometimes controversial model of citizen’s journalism and launching a new channel that will make it easier for the public’s video clips to make it into the news.
YouTube Direct will allow people to upload footage they think might be useful for news organisations, and will give a central place for news editors to head to, both to look for footage and request it.
News editors can post up “call out” videos for whatever they need, such as disaster footage, and give YouTube users the chance to get directly in contact with them with anything they can offer.
Denying YouTube Direct was an attempt to boost revenue, Steve Grove, head of news and politics at YouTube said: “It’s an incentive to upload great video, because of the recognition you’ll get from legitimate news organisation.”
Grove also said it would make the process of fact checking where footage came from and its authenticity much easier.
A couple of news organisations in the States are trying out the beta, and it will be rolled out further in the future.
