Next iPhone may be a selfie superstar thanks to an enhanced front camera
Details discovered in next OS preview hint at upgraded front camera with built-in flash
We don’t usually encourage taking selfies, but if you’re going to do them, at least do them well. Selfie-minded phones have been popping up here and there, and it sounds like Apple may be the next to put greater emphasis on its front-facing camera.
According to data reportedly discovered within the iOS 9 developer beta, Apple devices may have enhanced front camera functionality not found on current iPhones and iPads. Developer Hamza Sood found a listing of functions that tease some possible new features for the next generation of front-facing Apple device cameras.
Assuming the details pertain to the upcoming iPhone 7 (or 6s), the data shows a front camera capable of capturing 1080p footage at 60 frames per second, as well as 120fps slow-mo footage at that speed and 240fps slow-mo with a bump down to 720p resolution. That’s a nice bump over the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which both capture 720p footage at 30fps up front and can’t do front-facing slow-mo.
Additionally, it sounds as if the front camera will have its own dedicated flash, as well as support the ability to shoot panoramic photos. That last feature might not be as obviously useful as shooting panoramas from the main camera, but surely someone will prove us wrong with the epic, ultra-wide selfie of the century. (We can’t wait.)
