Could a £75 smartwatch actually be decent enough to wear?
One Chinese company wants to tempt us all with a cheap, stylish wristhugger
The Huawei Watch, Moto 360 and Apple Watch all look lovely, but their price tags are certainly nowhere near impulse purchase territory.
Chinese company Elephone wants to tempt smartwatch fence-sitters who aren’t prepared to fork out wads of cash, with the Ele, a US$115 (~£75) Android Wear smartwatch that actually looks pretty decent, from the few press shots we’ve seen of it, anyway.
It looks similar to its Motorola and Huawei rivals, thanks to its circular design and two o’ clock crown position. A 1.5in 320 x 320 TFT screen makes up the front of the watch, and unlike the 360, it’s completely circular, though that means it lacks an ambient light sensor.
The inside houses a 1.2GHz MediaTek processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of built-in storage, along with a generous 400mAh battery, and it all sounds and looks perfectly acceptable for a smartwatch. The advertised 80-hour battery life sounds great too, besting most of its rivals.
We’re a little skeptical of course, especially at this price point, but if it actually manages to deliver, then we’ll be very impressed indeed.
There’s no UK specific price or launch date, but we’ll keep an eye out for any more info.
