Apple rolls out iTunes Pass mobile payment service
A new, easier way to hand your money over to Tim Cook & co
Following a trial period in Japan – no, we’re not sure why either – Apple has rolled out iTunes Pass to the rest of the world.
The Passbook-based service allows customers to add credit to their App Store, iTunes Store or iBookstore account within Apple stores.
To take advantage of the new program, you need to access the iTunes Store on your device and tap the Redeem button at the bottom of the screen.
When you’re in an Apple store, you can call up your iTunes Pass in Passbook, present it to a specialist who will scan the pass, and your iTunes balance will be updated immediately.
Why would you want to do this instead of using a credit/debit card on the iTunes Store or purchasing a gift card to add credit to your account? Well, aside from suggesting that Apple’s getting serious about mobile payments, it’s a way for the company to reach the last few potential customers who don’t have access to a credit card – such as children, for example.
The iTunes Pass is now available in the UK, Japan, Australia, USA, and a number of European countries.
