Meet Delv – the free app with the algorithm for your ultimate night out

Wish clubs had see-through walls? No need, Delv’s genius hype bar knows where the party is

Free iPhone app Delv, live on the App Store today, is set to be more popular with UK students than a wayward Professor handing out test questions and jello shots.

Launching in Manchester, with all the main nightclubs in the city signed up, Delv feeds social media mentions of club nights from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram (plus some in-app data) into its algorithm, spitting them out in the form of a hype bar for each venue.

The list of rankings updates throughout the night as people tag friends in photos and tweet locations at the door with the server running the algorithm every 15 minutes; in future, there are plans to have Delv update more frequently, for a truly real time party radar.

Sighing and wishing Delv had existed during your uni days? There’s more, the app has entry deals and drinks freebies (once you sign in via email or Facebook) with maps, mobile numbers for guestlists and a countdown until each night starts.

After Party

Delv iPhone app - ultimate night out app

Backed by the ex co-founders of Angry Birds publisher Chillingo, Delv has no plans yet for in-app checking in Foursquare-style.

James Gordon, the fresh-faced 20 year old who co-founded Delv with fellow student Alex Blundell, says “We’ve noticed from other ‘nightclub’ apps that people don’t tend to want to actively say they’re going somewhere."

People change their mind a lot too. We feel by finding out where people are talking about rather than asking them, we’ll get more accurate results.”

The student entrepreneurs behind Delv say an Android app is the next priority and due in the next couple of months. The young devs are also hoping to get Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Cardiff, Sheffield and Bristol on the app by September – in time for Freshers Week – as well as working on cracking London this year too.

Download Delv from the App Store here. It’s a free app, with freebies. Exactly.
