Lego Super Mario unleashes brick-built scares in 2022 with three Luigi’s Mansion expansion sets
It’s-a-Lego-spooktacular!
When it was first announced, Lego Super Mario looked to be an odd concoction: neither videogame nor display set, the range instead sat awkwardly between the two. Or so people thought. Once we got out hands on some kits, they proved to be a lot of fun, akin to a brick-built Super Mario Maker.
Since then, Lego Super Mario has been bolstered by new sets, such as Stuff favourite Bowser’s Airship (a chunky flying boat with a huge claw to defeat and a clever expanding Technic mechanism that lets you get at the boat’s insides) and two-player action by way of the Luigi starter course.
Now, Lego and Nintendo want to bring you some “frightfully fun adventures” with three new Luigi’s Mansion expansion sets, due for release on 1 January 2022 from Lego and other retailers.
Fright club
The first two sets feature Luigi busting ghosts – or, more accurately, ‘catching ghosts’, because lawyers. The most wallet-friendly is Lab and Poltergust Expansion Set (£21.99/$24.95), where you suit up in an attempt to catch the Gold Ghost, grab a coin reward from the lab’s machine, have a natter with Professor E. Gadd and try to not get poisoned. Next up is Entryway Expansion Set (£34.99/$39.99), where you cunningly make your way into the mansion, defeat Bogmire, find a golden bone for Polterpup and keep an eye out for Boo.
The wave’s flagship is Haunt-and-Seek Expansion Set (£69.99/$79.99), which finds you hunting down hidden gems and dealing with rotating hallways while grumbling about how spooky houses always have such oddball interior design quirks. Natch, Lego suggests you grab all three and connect them together for the “ultimate chilling experience”, presumably referring to you being scared rather than connecting your blocky mansion to a Lego fridge.
