Chips ahoy! Snapdragon 821 to debut on Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe
The world gets its first taste of Qualcomm's new CPU
Barely a few days after Qualcomm officially announced its latest processor, the Snapdragon 821, Asus has revealed that its ZenFone 3 Deluxe smartphone will be using it.
Now, we know what you’re thinking – the Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe has already been released, and it has the “old” Snapdragon 820 inside! But what’s happening is that the phone is getting a chipset upgrade – although confusingly, the Snapdragon 821 version is just one of three new variants.
Besides the new Snapdragon, the highest-end version of the ZenFone 3 will have 6GB of DDR4 RAM, 256GB of storage with microSD support and cost NT24990 (£585).
Two other variants announced alongside it will run on Snapdragon 820, with a choice of 4GB RAM/32GB storage for NT15990 ($375), or 6GB RAM/64GB storage for NT17990 ($420).
The three models share the following specs: a 5.7in 1080p AMOLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 4, 3000mAh battery, 23MP f/2.0 rear camera with OIS, dual-tone flash and laser autofocus with an 8MP f/2.0 front cam. A fingerprint reader will be found on the back.
As for availability, the phones will be sold in Taiwan and Hong Kong by early August, though it’s likely the Snapdragon 821 variant will be released a little later.
The Snapdragon 821 will no doubt be popping up in a plethora of other smartphones and phablets in the next year or so. One upcoming flagship that’s strongly tipped to come with the 821? The Samsung Note 7.
