Here we have a true sign that the music industry is maturing into a ripe old age: it seems that established artists are now attempting to spread their flappable wings and hunt down additional revenue from digital music downloads, but with a difference.

Take Neil Young for example. Not only has his eagerly awaited (so we were told) album been made available to buy over the web before the CDs have hit the shops, ‘Living With War’ (pictured above) is also available uncompressed in WMA Lossless form.

MusicGiants is selling the entire album for around $15 and also sells numerous other uncompressed tracks at $1.29 each. Unfortunately they’re currently only available in the US and we’ll have to wait patiently for our turn.

So, it seems that thanks to the wonders of super-fast – not to mention ridiculously cheap – broadband, and ever increasing hard disk capacity, we can look forward to uncompressed music from the likes of Napster and, of course, iTunes.

Come on, we like Bloc Party as much as you guys, but not at 128kbps and not when it sounds like the band’s been trapped in a sound-dampening shoe-box and dumped at the bottom of the Thames. We know it makes sense.
