As song names go, Mogwai have got some pretty good ones. I Know You Are But What Am I?, Stop Coming To My House and Glasgow Mega-Snake spring to mind but their latest is really special, even by their standards. The Sun Smells Too Loud is not only brilliantly titled, it’s also totally free to download from the website of the band’s American record label, Matador. Brilliant. The moody Glaswegians with the penchant for sportswear, Celtic football club and playing very quietly, then building up to playing a bit louder until they can’t take it anymore and playing quietly again, have just finished a new album called The Hawk Is Howling. The Sun Smells Too Loud is a more uptempo affair than they’re known for, built on the foundation of an electro beat and layered with the more familiar sound of shimmering and distorted guitars. It’s about as poppy and accessible as Mogwai get, which is no bad thing, but expect the rest of the record to take you down a darker path when it hits the shops and download stores in September. Oh and also some even better song titles. How does I Love You, I’m Going to Blow Up Your School grab ya?Mogwai – The Sun Smells Too Loud (MP3)
