HP returns to the mobile market with Slate 6 and 7 Android phablets
The company’s first mobile devices since 2011 are coming – and well, we hope you like gold
HP hasn’t launched a tablet or smartphone since way back in 2011 – but the company today revealed plans for a pair of new Android tablets called the Slate 6 and Slate 7 VoiceTab.
Both devices appear to support phone functions (so they’re phablets, we suppose), and feature Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, a quad-core processor, 16GB of storage (plus a microSD slot allowing users to add an additional 32GB), 5MP rear camera with flash, 2MP front camera and front-facing stereo speakers.
The Slate 6 has a 1280 x 720 screen and is 9mm thick, while the Slate 7 VoiceTab has a 1280 x 800 resolution and 9.5mm width.
Fool’s gold
Design-wise, HP has gone bold with the Slates – a little too bold if you ask us. Gold might play well in certain parts of the world, and Apple may have made a gold iPhone – but there’s something decidedly tacky about the gilded edging and “digital camouflage” look of the Slates’ backsides. Here’s hoping any UK editions that might appear in future come out a little more understated.
The tablets will be launched in India initially, where they’ll be available from February. There’s no word on a UK launch for them yet, but HP (no doubt with a nod and a wink) says we can expect “more” in the coming months.
