As is customary for an Apple launch, there is a certain amount of fanfare. Suddenly everyone has to have a story related to the latest gadget to emerge, gleaming, from the design labs. Willy Wonka had his chocolate, and Steve Jobs has his computers. The world stands at the factory gates, transfixed.

That’s why fashion hacks drop the taffeta and saddle up their technology high horses. It is why the barman in your local pub can tell you what a load of rubbish it is months in advance of clapping eyes on one. And it is why we are all drawn to the slightest sniff of anything new.

And so yesterday, we received a press release stating: ‘four in ten ready to ditch traditional laptop for tablet PC as iPad launches in the UK.’

I won’t pretend I read the rest of it. Quite apart from the fact that ‘traditional laptop’ is an oxymoron, it’s just such obvious rubbish. You can fix a survey any way you want, but this takes the biscuit. You could walk into Apple’s Cupertino boardroom and ask ten of the directors, “Would you ditch your laptop for an iPad?” And you would not get four affirmatives. Probably not even one.

The iPad is lovely, but it isn’t – and has never claimed to be – a laptop replacement. The comparison is easy bait for a cheap story and nothing more. Believe me, you won’t ditch your laptop for a tablet.
