Like christening a child Percy, Voice over IP hasn’t given itself the best chance of mainstream popularity with its tongue-twisting moniker. A new website could, though, be about to bring it to the technophobes.
Jajah doesn’t need any phone adaptors, special handsets or contracts – all you do is visit the site, type in your own phone number and the one you want to call, hit the call button and you’ll both be able to natter on your normal phones for absurdly cheap prices.
Its prices compare favourably with VOIP-king Skype. With a Skype account you can call other users anywhere in the world for free, but its ‘SkypeOut’ charges to most landlines abroad cost 1.2p per minute.
With Jajah a call to, say, Germany costs a little more at 1.35p per minute, but this is the same whatever phone you’re using, whereas Skype charges a few pence more for calls to mobiles.
Whatever the differences between VOIP services, it’s certainly a hell of a lot of cheaper than a standard BT call, which would work out as 43.5p per minute for a call to Baden-Baden in Germany.
Jajah isn’t ideal if you want to call from a mobile, but does have a ‘call schedule’ function which lets you set up a specific time for a chat when you know you’ll be near a PC.
