The first rumblings of a heart rate monitor for the iPod-friendly Nike+ training system surfaced back in 2008 – and now it seems the device could well be set for launch in the near future.

A Nike employee told the official Nike forums that a Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor would launch on June 1 in the US, before launching internationally later in the summer.

The employee wouldn’t elaborate on that, so we still don’t know the finer points like price, features, colours and which iPods it’ll play nice with. Looks like we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Recently, Nike’s on-the-go running soiution has been losing ground to Adidas’s miCoach Pacer, which includes a heart-rate monitor. But it doesn’t look like Nike has given up its hopes in this race.

Stuff, as ever, watches trackside with bated breath.
