Nokia: “No, we’re not going to start making phones again”
Sorry nostalgia junkies, you can't go back to the past
If last week’s rumours of a Nokia smartphone-making revival got you all excited, prepare yourself for a bucket of appropriately cold Finnish water. It’s not happening.
Re/code had reported that Nokia was plotting to return to phone manufacturing in late 2016 (as per the terms of Nokia’s contract with Microsoft, who purchased the device arm of Nokia in a €5.4 billion in 2013, the Finnish giant would not be allowed to launch any phones bearing its name until the second half of next year).
However, the Finnish phone giant has announced that it will not be re-entering the market after all.
Below is the official statement by Nokia:
Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.
And so, with the statement above, Nokia has pretty much officially pulled out from the mobile phone consumer market. For now, anyhow.
