Sounds like Nokia is preparing to release a new version of its web tablet. The 330 is a smaller, slicker version of the 770 – a device that has been quietly gaining fans (myself included) over the past 18 months.
When I first heard about Nokia’s 770 web tablet last year, I was very dismissive. It was underpowered, lacked a mobile phone connection, and ran Linux instead of Symbian. In short, it was all wrong.
But then I started using a 770, hooking up to my home Wi-Fi connection to browse the web when I couldn’t be bothered to boot up the laptop. And I’ve kept on using it ever since.
Although it’s highly portable, I mostly use the 770 from the comfort of my sofa, looking up films and actors on imdb.com while watching TV. The high-res touchscreen provides an intuitive way to browse the web and the latest software has introduced a bunch of new features, including VoIP calling. I can also use it to stream the gigs of music I’ve uploaded to mp3tunes.com. In fact, it does pretty much everything I’d want from an Ultra-Mobile PC, without the Windows XP overkill of Samsung’s Q1. (It also helps that the 770 costs £245 compared to the Q1’s £900.)Rumours are that the 330 will feature a smaller screen – 3.5in rather than 4in – which could seriously affect usability. However, the upside is that it may feature GPS – which suggests it’s designed for life on the move rather than life in the living room.
