Olympus E-PL1 – third member of the PEN family leaked
The Olympus Pen E-P2 may not have been long on the shelves, but Olympus has already geared up its successor – and all the deets have leaked out ahead
The Olympus Pen E-P2 may not have been long on the shelves, but Olympus has already geared up its successor – and all the deets have leaked out ahead of the official announcement tomorrow.
The E-PL1 packs the same Micro Four Thirds technology as the two Pens before it, but will take on a more entry-level guise, with easy-to-use features for beginners and a lower price tag.
This means the 12.3 megapixel snapper will include additions such as a direct record button for capturing your HD video quickly and easily, and a Live Guide to take you through different photography techniques. You’ll see your picture change on the 2.7-inch display as you make the adjustments, without any need for prior techy know how.
Packing the same sensor under the hood as the E-30 and E360 DSLR cameras, the E-PL1 has also has image stabilisation worked in to the body in order to keep the cost of lenses down.
It’s the first in the new Pen series to feature a pop-up flash, so no need to buy one separately, and it’ll come complete with 19 scene modes, an auto mode, face detection and an HDMI port for hooking your camera up to an HD TV.
As for pricing and availability, it seems the E-PL1 will be in shops from March, with a US price tag of $599.99. The site which leaked the details has said Olympus is planning an announcement at 6am tomorrow, so here’s hoping we get a UK price then.
