Four months ago Casio wowed digicam crowds by becoming the first 10MP compact, and its feat seems to have lifted a mental barrier for its competitors – this new Olympus is the sixth lightweight snapper to match its megapixel haul.
The mju 1000 has clean-cut if unremarkable looks, and offers similar features to its 10MP foes. The optical zoom is a slightly disappointing 3x, but it is a particular fan of low-light conditions with a maximum ISO of 6400.
Elsewhere, there’s a 2.5in screen to frame your shots and provide access to a number of user-friendly features, including 20 scene modes – such as Landscape, Sports and the heart-warmingly romantic Candle Light – and a ‘Perfect Fix’ mode to help address problems like red eye post-shot.
Despite its highly precious innards, the 1000 doesn’t consider itself above a bit of rough and tumble either. The case is supposedly ‘weatherproof’ – which roughly translates as ‘take me outside but don’t drop me in a lake’ – and the built-in gyro should provide decent image stabilisation.
It’s far from Olympus’ only announcement this morning either – we’ll be rounding up its six, yes six, other snappers in just a tick.
