Oppo’s 16MP front camera-packing R9 and R9 Plus are Instagram dreams come true
Selfie your heart out
So selfie-mad you can’t even begin to figure out how the rear camera on your phone actually works? Oppo’s got two new models that should be perfect.
The R9 and R9 Plus were announced in China this week. Oppo has been pushing its selfie-friendly phone features for quite a while now, but these two really demonstrate it with a massive 16MP front camera.
Yes, front camera.
It’s got an f/2.0 lens, compared to the f/2.2 aperture on the 13MP rear sensor.
Besides having a massive selfie cam, the 5.5in Oppo R9 has a Full HD AMOLED display and a super-thin 1.66mm bezel.
Inside, an octa-core Mediatek Helio P10 chipset runs the show, with four 1GHz cores and four 2GHz cores. There’s 4GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage, and a microSD card slot for up to 128GB cards.
What about the bigger R9 Plus? It boosts the display up to 6 inches, with slightly thicker yet still crazy thin 1.76mm bezels.
It also swaps out the Mediatek chip for a Snapdragon 652 chipset, but keeps the 4GB of RAM. You also get a choice of 64GB or 128GB storage.
Unlike the smaller version, the R9 plus has 16MP cameras on the front and back, and is also capable of 4K video recording.
Expect to find fingerprint sensors and big batteries too: the R9 has 2,850mAh while the Plus goes all the way to 4,120mAh.
What’s slightly disappointing is that the phones are only on Android Lollipop, which makes us wonder how long they were in the making to get an outdated OS.
The Oppo R9 is should set you back US$430 and the 64GB R9 Plus US$510. The R9 will arrive in China this week, but the bigger brother won’t turn up until April 12.
Stay tuned for when the phone will be released over here.
