Pebble Health brings native activity tracking to the Pebble Time

Latest firmware update adds the Health platform, plus Timeline for classic watches

Apple has its own Health app, and Google has Google Fit – but Pebble’s watches have had to rely on third-party apps like Misfit and Jawbone to get their daily stats. That’s no longer the case, at least with the current-gen watches.

Today, the company launched Pebble Health, a native platform for the Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round watches that automatically tracks your activity during the day. That means it’ll count your steps while you’re wearing the device, and then track your sleep – assuming you leave the watch on overnight, of course.

Since it’s baked into the operating system, you’ll get your health stats as part of the Timeline interface. “Its seamless integration with Timeline makes your day’s stats and insights conveniently glanceable and accessible,” promises the blog post. “Wake up to a Timeline pin reviewing how much you slept. Wrap up the day with a report of your step count.”

And it actually ties into Apple’s HealthKit and Google Fit, so you can work Pebble’s data into your overall fitness and health tracking. Pebble will also release a Health API early next year so developers can build apps around the platform. The company plans to allow non-identifiable data to be used for health and medical research, as well, thanks to a collaboration with Stanford University researchers.

As for old-school Pebble and Pebble Steel users – unfortunately, you don’t have access to Pebble Health. But with today’s 3.8 firmware update, you do get access to the Timeline interface seen on the Time watches. So whatever your Pebble, update your iOS or Android app to get the latest perks.
