Philips’ Skype phone says no to PCs and Wi-Fi

Forget waiting for those tardy Wi-Fi Skype phones from Netgear and Belkin – Philips has introduced a new internet DECT phone that doesn’t need a Wi-Fi network or chain you to a PC. The VOIP841 plugs straight into your home phone and broadband jacks, using the latter to hook up to your Skype account and let you call other users anywhere in the world for free. The DECT phone will ring as normal whether you’re receiving an internet call or a standard landline call, and the direct connection to your broadband will save you faffing with Wi-Fi networks. Its 64k colour screen will also recreate the homely look of Skype’s homepage and let you create a single contact list for both Skype contacts and normal numbers, so none of your friends can complain of favouritism. Philips couldn’t tell us any more about a UK launch and pricing, but it’s expected to be on shelves before Christmas.
