The Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9983 is expectedly sleek, expensive

New ultra-premium handset can simultaneously turn heads and strangle wallets

If buying an exorbitantly overpriced smartphone makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, then BlackBerry’s latest collaboration with Porsche Design should set you right.

The Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9983 is the third such ultra-premium model to come from this odd pairing, and as we saw in last month’s leaked images, it’s not hugely different in the basic shape as the earlier, initial P’9981.

Where it varies, of course, is with its 3.1in touch screen, BlackBerry 10 operating system (with the new personal assistant and other tweaks), and “specially crafted glass-like keys with the durability of rigid synthetic material.”

What we didn’t know last month was just how much the latest Porsche BlackBerry would cost, but now that’s clear: it’s selling for €1650, or about £1290. If that general target holds up for the UK list price, it’ll be a little cheaper than last year’s P’9982.

Perhaps BlackBerry finally has some sense about this ultra-exclusive smartphone, which is due out in October. Wait, no, that’s still a nearly £1300 phone. Nevermind.
