Ricoh’s wide-eyed Caplio R8

Ricoh pretty much invented the wide-angle compact camera, but now it seems everyone’s muscling in on its turf. This is Ricoh’s answer: the ten-megapixel Caplio R8, with a 7.1x zoom that stretches from a whole-room capturing 28mm to a sniper-shooting 200mm.

Being a Ricoh, it boasts a few other tricks that other cams leave off. These include snap focus, which eliminates the need to ‘half press’ the shutter to get a focus lock, and a ‘fix minimum aperture’ option that ensures maximum depth of field for your shots.

Ricoh’s not skimped on the all-metal body either, and it’s kept its proper CCD-shift wobble reduction – no dodgy digital shortcuts here.

The styling’s still on the functional side, so it’s also rolled out the svelte-looking 10mp Caplio R50 with ‘only’ a 5x zoom and no wide-angle. Still, that’s the price of beauty.
