We thought compact cameras were getting a little silly at 10 megapixels but Sigma’s just gone and blown everyone out of the water with 14. By our usual rule of thumb, that’s just far too many pixels to cram on a tiny compact sensor.Sensor sensibilityOn closer inspection, however, it appears that Sigma’s using the larger ‘APS’ sized sensor from its professional SD14 DSLR. The larger sensor size gives each pixel a little more room to breathe, which should allow this camera to take some stunning DSLR-quality photos. No price details as yet but expect it to be a lot more than your average holiday snapper. And, while the 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens is welcome, the lack of zoom will be offputting to many. Expect a range of add-on tele-converters to follow.
