Sky subscribers get to watch football for free with Sky Sports Mix
Basic Sky customers get a pick’n’mix selection - no Sky Sports sub required
Can’t get enough sport in your life, but balk at the thought of splashing out for Sky’s top-flight Sports package? You’re in luck.
Sky has just revealed Sky Sports Mix, a sports channel that’ll be available to every Sky customer – even the ones that don’t pay for the extra Sports pack.
It’ll show a selection of live football games, including Premier League, Football League, La Liga, MLS and select World Cup qualifiers, with Sky picking which teams get airtime – saving blanket coverage for the other dedicated Sky Sports channels.
Previously, the only way to watch Sky’s Premier League games was to shell out for a Sky Sports subscription – or head to a pub that was showing the game.
It won’t just be football, either; Sky is planning to show live golf from the US and Europe, and international cricket matches. There’ll be a bigger commitment to women’s sports too, with live golf, cricket and netball.
Sky’s planning to show other sports-themed content too, including documentaries, entertainment shows and sporting masterclasses for younger viewers.
Sky Sports Mix sounds like a direct response to BT’s rapidly-growing football coverage; it now has rights to show Premier League, Champions League and Europa Cup games, and gives away access to its Sports channels with select broadband packages.
Sky, meanwhile, has the rights to 126 live Premier League games over the next three seasons – expect a fair few to be broadcast for free on the new channel when it launches this summer.
