Sony NGP to offer all games as downloads

The Next Generation Portable releasing all games in both physical and digital formats could help promote more creative game ideas

The Sony NGP needs something other than console graphics and augmented reality on a handheld to make it truly next generational. Sony plans to fill that void with digital games released simultaneously with physical flash card versions.

The advantage is that game developers won’t run the risk of raking up shelf space and costing lots of money if it fails. This means more creative risks and, hopefully, a stepping stone for new creative ideas and design teams (think mobile app-style). With games ranging from £1-10 and being anywhere up to 4GB in size, the flash card format will be a welcome extra for those sporting the puny 3G bandwidth. Let’s just hope Sony can avoid releasing failures like WTF: Work Time Fun, this time around.
