Sony really is putting a 4K screen on the Xperia Z5 Premium, according to leaked video

Do you really need an 808ppi display on a handset? Maybe not, but Sony is going there anyway

Despite consistently putting out sleek, impressive handsets, Sony has had trouble convincing customers in the ultra-competitive smartphone market. But for its next handset, the company may have figured out how to out-premium other makers.

According to a leaked hands-on video featuring a French marketing director from Sony, the Xperia Z5 Premium will indeed feature a 4K Ultra HD display, which should come in at a stunning resolution of 3840×2160. At 5.5in, that works out to a pixels per inch (ppi) count of 808ppi. Compare that to the LG G4, which comes in at 538ppi.

This latest leak matches up well with last week’s report, which claimed that a Facebook page from Sony Georgia listed a 4K screen for the Premium model, as well. The video has since been pulled, but in it, Olivier Terme, Sony Mobile’s French marketing director, reportedly detailed the three handsets that will be announced this week at IFA 2015.

Joining the Xperia Z5 Premium are the 5.2in Xperia Z5 (leaked image shown above) and the 4.6in Xperia Z5 Compact. Android Police speculates that the standard Xperia Z5 will have a 1080p display, while the smallest model should come in at 720p.

All three phones are expected to share a lot of specs otherwise, including a Snapdragon 810 processor, 23-megapixel back camera, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, a fingerprint sensor, and promised two-day battery life. Sony Mobile’s IFA event is on Wednesday, so we ought to have confirmation on everything in just a couple days.
