With Apple’s video-enabled iPod already firmly established and Archos forging ahead with countless new models, will a video jukebox from Sony be able to challenge the top two?At a recent Walkman press conference, Sony Senior Vice President Hiroshi Yoshioka told the press, ‘We are developing a product that handles images, but I cannot make any comment on specific plans.’LegacySony’s Walkman range single-handedly invented the portable music phenomena but its reluctance to let go of its own MiniDisc brand and instead concentrate on solid state digital music and video may have cost it dear.As recently as June this year the company released a portable DVD player (pictured above) in Japan, seemingly oblivious to the digital video revolution passing by under its nose.With Microsoft’s Zune about to throw a luxuriously decorated hat into the music playing ring, Sony could soon find itself fighting a losing battle for the portables market.
