If you thought you were the mutt’s when you got your ‘up to 50Mbps’ Virgin connection, just wait until 2012. That’s because BT has announced that its rollout of a superfast 100Mbps – beefy enough for high-def video – is ahead of schedule.

Of course, there are a couple of caveats: you’ll only get that speed if BT runs a fibre-optic cable directly to your house. If it goes to a box down the road first, you’ll be stuck with 40Mbps. Which, let’s face it, is still pretty good.

BT CEO Ian Livingston has said that the company aims to get the service into 10million homes by the time the London 2012 Olympic Games starts on 27 July.
