Tesco launches DRM–free download store
Buying your tunes at Tesco has always been a chastening experience for the real record lover. But your guilt–based Snow Patrol shopping is getti
Imaginatively dubbed Tesco Digital, the new offering will replace the retail giant’s current Windows Media–shackled store. When the new service goes live next month, 1.6 million of the 3.3 million tunes up for grabs will be DRM–free MP3s. The rest of the catalogue will get the same makeover later this year.
Tesco has also said it’ll offer free Flash games to punters. They’ve also outlined plans to bring TV and movies to the service. “We’re starting out with a comprehensive music offering, but customers can expect downloadable TV and films as well as games to buy very soon,” said Commercial Director, Graham Harris.
Tracks and album costs will vary, with the site also giving you the chance to download video and track bundles at different prices.
With Tesco already slapping down every competitor in sight, it’s clear they fancy taking on the might of Jobs and iTunes, not to mention weighing into the digital fight before Amazon launches their own one–stop–shop here in the summer.
