Ubuntu Edge smartphone-cum-PC revealed
Now it just needs US$32 million in crowdfunding via Indiegogo to actually become a reality
Canonical has just announced the Ubuntu Edge smartphone running, you guessed it, Ubuntu Linux.
The angular handset will sport a 4.5in 720p screen, which sounds pretty standard fare – but with the Sapphire crystal screen it’ll be virtually unscratchable. Plus it’ll pack a whopping 4GB RAM and 128GB storage, making it the most memory-packed smartphone to date.
But the specs aren’t the really special part – the Edge will feature a dual OS (Android and Ubuntu) that will boot into a full Ubuntu PC OS when the mobile is connected to a monitor. Sound familiar? Motorola tried something similar with the Motorola Atrix, with limited success – but that didn’t have Ubuntu and its gloriously open-source freedom.
We can’t wait to find out more about the silicon anode battery it will come with, too. Could this be the answer to our charging woes? We’ll have to wait 30 days to see if the Indiegogo project hits its staggering US$32 million target.
