Virgin Media goes 4K with new V6 TiVo box
Anything Sky Q can do…
Virgin Media has joined the 4K ranks, matching rivals BT and Sky by unveiling a new set-top box equipped to output sparklingly detailed Ultra HD shows and movies.
The company today teased its latest set-top box, the Virgin TV V6 of which 4K output is presumably only one of several new features. Sadly, though, we’ll have to wait a while to find out what those are precisely, because Virgin isn’t revealing anything else until the official launch event – for which, as yet, there’s no date.
So what can we tell you from this image? Well, it looks big, and boxy – certainly not the sleekest looking piece of design. Judging by the size of the remote next to it, it’s got a smaller footprint than many set-top recorders – but it’s also taller.
We also know that it’s powered by TiVo technology, so you can expect a familiar UI, app compatibility and a plethora of tuners enabling several channels to be recorded simultaneously. The current Virgin Media TiVo can store 500 hours of programming, recording up to three channels while you watch a fourth – and we expect the V6 to offer a step up in performance and/or capacity, especially given 4K video will take up a lot more space than regular HD material.
Aside from that, it looks like you’ll have to wait until Virgin’s big launch. We’ll update this story then. Stay tuned, telly addicts.
