Vivo X5 Pro’s eye scanner might be well worth looking at

Thumbprint recognition? That's sooooo 2014

For the past few weeks, Vivo has been bombarding us with teasers for its next smartphone, the X5 Pro.

Until now it’s all been fairly unexciting, but a new image of the phone posted on Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter, apparently confirms the X5 Pro will be getting a genuinely cutting-edge feature: eye recognition technology.

In a post accompanying the image, Vivo boasts that eye recognition is more secure than any other authentication method, as the biometrics of the eye cannot be copied. Vivo claims that this technology will not only be used for unlocking the phone, but for specific apps too.

We don’t know a whole lot about about the X5 Pro yet, but a launch event is rumoured to be imminent: next Thursday, 7th May, has been bandied around as a likely date.

So far we’re pretty sure that the phone will feature a metal build and a curved glass front (said to provide a “2.5D” effect, whatever that means), as well as a 3,500mAh battery, a USB type C connector, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset and 3GB of RAM. It’s also rumoured to be capable of taking 32MP pictures with its front camera, likely achieved through some feat of software trickery rather than an actual 32MP sensor. The main camera, meanwhile, may use phase detection autofocus – a method used by the iPhone 6 and recent Samsung Galaxy S phones that many regard as faster and more accurate than the contrast detection autofocus used by most smartphones.

Being honest, Vivo isn’t likely to launch this phone in the UK, but being the first to market with an eye scanner could spark a trend in other manufacturers. Who knows, in a year’s time the idea of keying in a passcode or even scanning your thumbprint could be regarded as old fashioned.
