Sky signs up Sony for first 4K movies

Still no launch date, but here's what you'll be able to watch

It won’t just be live sport filling screens when Sky rolls out its 4K service later this year – a new deal has bagged some big-name movies as well.

The exclusive tie-in between Sky and Sony Pictures means Sky Q will be the only subscription service showing Angry Birds, Money Monster and Inferno for at least a year after they hit cinemas.

Sky Movies, Sky Cinema and Sky Film subscribers will also be able to watch the Ghostbusters reboot, which should hit the service a few months after it makes its way to the multiplex.

Classic Sony films and other new releases will be available to rent, and potentially purchase depending on which country you’re in, but there’s no clue which will turn up in 4K.

With 4K Blu-ray slow on the up-take, it’s great to see 4K content making its way to TVs through other services.

Sky’s going big on UHD, with Formula One, Premiership football, international cricket and other major sporting events set to broadcast later this year.

The Sony movies deal looks set to be limited to Sky customers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy, and you’ll only get 4K if you’ve got Sky Q and the right TV package.

There’s still no official launch date for 4K, but seeing as Sky’s promising to show the 2016/2017 football season in glorious UHD, that hopefully means an August arrival at the latest.
