The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the latest super-slim foldable phone

Svelte Samsung rival also packs Leica cameras and high-end hardware

There must be something in the water: in the space of 24 hours we’ve seen four new foldables, with Xiaomi being the latest to break cover. At a mere 5.4mm thick when unfolded, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 lays claim to being the world’s slimmest folding phone.

Announced less than a day after Samsung revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, and mere hours after Motorola pulled back the curtain on the 2022 Motorola Razr, the Mix Fold 2 is an inward-folding flagship that snaps shut to a svelte 11.2mm. That’s noticeably skinnier than the Samsung Fold 4.

Xiaomi actually had to shrink battery capacity versus the OG Mix Fold in order to achieve such diminutive dimensions, making do with a 4500mAh cell. It’s tasked with powering a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU, 12GB of RAM and a choice of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of on-board storage. 67W wired charging apparently takes 40 minutes for a complete top-up, through a USB-C port that’s only just small enough to fit inside the phone.

It’s rocking a 6.56in, 2520 x 1080 AMOLED outer display with Gorilla Glass Victus to see off scratches, and an 8.02in, 2160×1914 inner panel complete with silky smooth 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The firm promises 1000 nits peak brightness, along with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision video playback.

Xiaomi’s own MIUI Fold 13 interface includes a taskbar at the bottom of the screen for easier multitasking (just like the Galaxy Z Fold 4) and more multitasking abilities than before. It’s using Android 12L underneath, which has been optimised for bigger, and folding, displays.

Leica has signed off on the three-lens rear camera array, which includes a 50MP main snapper with optical image stabilisation, 13MP ultrawide and 8MP telephoto good for 2x optical zoom. There’s also a 20MP punch-hole selfie camera on the outer display.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 colour options

The 256GB Mix Fold 2 starts at 8999 Yuan in China (roughly £1100), rising to 9999 Yuan (£1220) and 11999 Yuan (£1450) for the larger capacity versions. That’s a healthy amount less than the OG Mix Fold, at least for the base model.

As with the first-gen Mix Fold, we’re not expecting this new model to make its way out of Xiaomi’s home territory – at least officially. It’s up for pre-order in China right now, with phones set to land with customers starting from the 16th of August.

Xiaomi’s Chinese website has all the details for now.
