Alcatel’s Idol 4S could be an MWC sleeper surprise
Leaked specs show a high-spec phablet - let's hope the price is right
Alcatel’s best known for budget phones, so you might not expect it to pull a high-spec handset out of the bag, but there could be two coming at MWC.
AndroidPolice spotted support pages on Alcatel’s own website (which have now been taken down) had revealed the Idol 4 and Idol 4S a little early. They both look pretty tasty, but if you like bigger phones the Idol 4S will be the one to go for.
It looks set to have a 5.5in QHD AMOLED screen, which puts it level with flagship phones like Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and the LG G4.
Expect an octa-core Snapdragon CPU and 3GB of RAM, a massive 3000mAh battery, 16MP camera with video stabilisation, and 32GB of storage plus a microSD card slot.
The smaller Idol 4 should have a 5.2in Full HD LCD screen, slightly slower octa-core Snapdragon CPU, a 13MP rear camera, and 16GB on-board memory with microSD storage.
Both phones will run Android 6 Marshmallow, and add extra features on top like tap to wake. The leaked images show custom icons, but it mostly looks like vanilla Android underneath rather than a custom skin.
The phones themselves look pretty slick too. We can’t tell if they’re made from metal and glass or just convincing plastic, but they’ve definitely got a Galaxy S6-vibe going on.
There’s no word on price or an official launch date just yet – we’ll probably have to wait for MWC to learn more. If Alcatel gets the price right, they could be a bargain alternative to expensive flagships from the bigger brands.
