Are you the King/Queen of Solitaire? Microsoft intends to find out

All those hours in the office practising might just pay off

Remember all those hours you spent in front of your PC playing Solitaire or Minesweeper? They might not be wasted after all.

In honour of Solitaire‘s 25th anniversary, Microsoft has launched a challenge to the world, inviting everyone to play in a Solitaire Tournament. Yes, you too.

As a starting point, Microsoft is seeking the best players from within its own ranks by hosting a competition that pits employees against each other. The company’s best will then take on the public from 5 June onwards. You can read more in Microsoft’s blog post here.

Solitaire was first introduced to PCs on 18 May 1990 and has appeared in most versions of Windows since (although not, by default, Windows 8). Since then it’s undergone many changes, as well as spawning spin-offs such as Klondike, FreeCell, Spider, Pyramid and TriPeaks. You’ll be able to compete in these games too, but as far as we’re concerned nothing beats playing the original.

There’s been no news yet on prizes, but frankly, worldwide bragging rights should be enough for most people.
