BlackBerry Tag delivers tap to share super powers

It takes two to tag – RIM's new tap to share feature is BlackBerry-bound

BlackBerry may have future-proofed its latest flurry of BlackBerry smarties with NFC chips – including the Bold 9900 – but it appears RIM has more than just mobile payments in mind. Announced today at GITEX in Dubai, BlackBerry Tag – its new social sharing feature – will make use of these NFC chips to take trading and sharing to the next level.

RIM’s NFC-sharing Tag feature will be rolled out to users in the BlackBerry OS 7 update. It works by simply tapping two Tag-enabled phones together. The idea is BlackBerry users will be able to seamlessly swap multimedia, contacts and BBM info, in addition to sharing URLs and documents across handsets. Remember the Bump app? It’s a bit like that. Move over Bluetooth.

RIM is also encouraging developers to hop onboard the Tag-ing action by incorporating its new feature into their own applications through APIs.
