JVC announces high-end video/still hybrid GC-PX10
Look what happens when a DSLR has sexy time with a handycam
JVC’s GC-PX10 is an odd looking device. In fact, its top-heavy body looks like the result of a love-in between a DSLR and a handycam. But once you’ve stopped sniggering over its design, you realise this thing is pretty powerful. We’re talking about 12MPs, full 1080p HD video recording at 36Mbps and a 1/2.3in back-Illuminated CMOS sensor for solid low-light performance, complimented nicely by an ISO of up to 6400. Chuck in 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and the ability to simultaneously capture 8.3MP stills, while shooting full HD video and JVC’s bizarre-looking hybrid isn’t so funny anymore.
Built around JVC’s Falconbrid processor, there are two standout features. It can shoot video at a whopping 300fps, then play it back at 30fps to slow it down 1/10th of realtime. This can’t be done in full HD, but at 640×360 (VGA), it’s got standard definition and posting online covered. It’ll be able to sustain a full two hours shooting in this mode, too – that’s a whole lot of super slow-mo footage.
Its burst mode also throws up an insane 60 shots per second, and up to 130 shots per burst when shooting at a slightly reduced 8.3MPs. Or you could just opt for 12MP stills at 30 shots per second on its Konica Minolta HD lens.
Auto and manual settings are covered, as are microphone output and input; there’s 32GB of on-board memory, HDMI output, an SDXC/SDHC card slot and a tilting 3in display.
Sounds good, doesn’t it? This big-barrelled shooter can be yours as of next month for US$900. There doesn’t seem to be any mention of a UK release date, though.
