The new Honor 8 is a stylish glass beauty
Double-glass design a great alternative to those sick of metal
Looks aren’t everything, so the saying goes – but when it comes to smartphones they sure do help.
Huawei clearly knows this, because it’s kitted out the new Honor 8 with a gorgeous glass exterior.
Encased in a 2.5D double glass body, there’s a sleek shimmer and polish to it that’ll certainly turn a few heads. It’s only 7.45mm thick and weighs just 153g – definitely putting it in the svelte category.
Solid specs in an attractive package
But there’s more to it than just a pretty face (or should that be "fascia"?). The phone comes powered with a Kirin 950 octa-core processor running at 2.3GHz, with 3GB and 4GB of LP-DDR4 memory options. Storage-wise, you’ll get to pick between 32GB and 64GB. Huawei has put dual 12MP Leica-branded cameras on the back, with an 8MP front-facer taking care of selfie duties.
There’s dual-SIM and microSD support, with one of the SIM slots acting as the microSD port. Display-wise, you get a nice 1080p 5.2in screen. There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back, too.
Battery-wise it has a sizeable 3150mAh cell while for the OS, it runs Android 6.0 with Huawei’s own EMUI 4.1 sitting on top. There’ll be a USB Type-C port for charging. And the phone supports FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, TD-LTE and WDCMA bands, which makes it a traveller’s dream.
The Honor 8 will go on sale in China from 10.08am on 19 July, in five colour options – Pearl White, Sunrise Gold, Midnight Black, Sakura Pink, and Sapphire Blue. Note that some colours won’t be available for some variants.
Pricing is RMB1999 (£225) for the 3GB/32GB variant and RMB2299 (£260) for the 4GB/32GB version, while the 4GB/64GB version will cost RMB2499 (£280). That’s impressively affordable, as the Honor 8 is actually incredibly similar to the £450 Huawei P9 (which we heaped praise on in our review) in terms of specs. We’ll keep you posted on a potential UK release.
