The camcorder ain’t dead quite yet. Uploading those low-res camera movies to YouTube may be fun for a while, but if you want a proper home movie session, DVD camcorders are hard to beat.
Enter, stage left, Canon with a new trio of the machines – the DC19, DC21 and DC22, snappy – all of which look pretty much like the DC19 pictured above.
They’re fairly bog-standard, which is kinda expected seeing as the top model of the bunch – the DC22 – is unlikely to cost more than £500 judging from US prices.
Like Canon’s last gen of DVD camcorders, they’ll burn to mini discs so you can eschew buggering around with a PC and simply chuck ‘em in your DVD player for big screen viewing when you get home. One bonus is that potential recording capacities are now doubled, as they support DVD-R dual layer discs. Other video features include widescreen recordings – naturally – and 10x zooms for all three ‘corders.
Still photos are limited to basic 2.2MP, which, frankly, our Sony Ericsson and Nokia cameraphones would probably put to shame.
The 19 is the budget job – it even drops real basics like an AV-out socket – while the 21 is the average joe and the 22 goes is the lux option, offering an analogue-in video port for a handy way of converting those last few, lurking VHS tapes.
Canon’s also just dropped the news that it’ll be launching the HV10, a high-def camcorder to rival Sony’s tasty HDR-HD3. We’ll have more on it first thing tomorrow.
