Apple iWatch reportedly slated for October release
Company expected to produce 3-5 million units per month of health-centric wearable
Surprised that Apple didn’t debut its long-rumoured iWatch at WWDC alongside the Health app for iOS 8? It shouldn’t be too much longer, as sources report today that the wearable device is planned for an October release.
Both Nikkei Asian Review and Recode cite sources familiar with Apple’s plans in reports saying that we’ll see the device launch during that autumn month, and Recode in particular notes that Apple will hold an event that month to show off its wearable before it hits stores.
One interesting tidbit in the Nikkei story is that Apple has partnered with Nike for health services. Nike reportedly laid off much of its FuelBand team in April, with rumours then that the company would team with Apple for its own fitness-centric device.
Nikkei claims that Apple is so confident in the iWatch’s appeal that it plans output of 3-5 million units per month of the device, which is expected to have a curved OLED display and monitor and track health and lifestyle data.
With iOS 8’s Health app (pictured above) and HealthKit API also due out this autumn, it makes sense that Apple would choose then to make its big splash in the wearables department.
