Steady on there Captain literal, this is no ordinary paper – in fact not one tree was harmed in order to bring it in to the world. This, my simple friend, is the future of flexible display technology.
Bendy screens? Haven’t they been around for years?
In one form or another, yes, but Sony’s miraculous forging methods using a plastic substrate have resulted in a display that’s an impossibly 150μm thick with a barely-there weight of only 20g. Your Sunday paper seems positively elephantine in comparison.
I hope the performance isn’t lightweight too.
It’s no 4k resolution display, but a 13.3in screen with a 1600 x 1200 resolution is nothing to be sniffed at. Neither is the 10:1 contrast ratio, 150dpi resolution or 13 per cent colour gamut – positively heavyweight specs by flexible display standards.
When can I expect my featherlight, flexible Metro then?
Not for a good long while yet. This panel is only just a proof of concept that the Japanese electronics wizards have unveiled at the Society for Information Display (SID) conference this year. It’s a promising glimpse of the future, but we’re still a long way from it being used to wrap up Friday night’s cod and chips.
